Who are we?
Tenacities advises Architects and Developers on urban security.
Too often, security design is neither tailored to the relevant risks, nor respectful of the design vision. Consequently, Security can be perceived more as a burden and less as a desirable quality.
We believe that Security is an essential prerequisite for livable places. Our ambition is to pave the way for a paradigm shift in urban security.
We are a team of experienced advisors with over 40 years of combined experience, understanding trends in urban development, identifying risks to future cities, and scouting innovative security solutions, now at the heart of our work.

Our vision
Urban security is traditionally focused on providing protection against known threats.
It is based on restricting people’s access to spaces by establishing physical perimeters. As such, it compromises the ideals of proximity and accessibility.
For a city to become resilient against future threats but also to remain a livable place, this approach is insufficient.
Our vision is a security system that enables a city to respond to all kinds of unforeseen shocks and stresses but that remains largely invisible itself.

Our goal is to align our work with the overarching design process, so we can provide the required information and deliverables at the right stage of the planning process.
While acknowledging that every project is unique, we generally follow a three-stage methodology:
Context Analysis
Evaluate the main factors that shape the Security Design:
- Regional Context
- Vision and Objectives
- Envisioned Design
- Threats and Risks
- Applicable Standards
Strategy Definition
Develop a tailored Security Strategy for the project, outlining:
- Security Vision
- Guiding principles
- Objectives
Solution Design
Define the required security capabilities and resulting security solutions, including:
- Definition of specific security zones
- Selection of adequate design, technical and organizational measures.
- Integration of the individual measures into a comprehensive Security System
How do we design a security system?
The basic premise is that a holistic security system needs to comprise certain security capabilities, namely Detection, Deterrence, Delay and Response. Analysis function as an additional, overarching layer.
These capabilities can be defined as follows:
Detect
Identify and verify the threats as they are happening
Deter
Discourage the attack or threat from ever happening
Delay
Postpone a threat from reaching your assets allowing for response to happen
Respond
Active answer to a threat to minimize the impact and support swift recovery.
Analyze
Apply automated rules to identify a pending or evolving incident.
Towards invisible security
The current approach to urban security does not address the vision for and the risks to future cities.
A new security paradigm is required.

Managing Director & Founder
Knut founded Tenacities to manifest a new security paradigm for future cities.
He brings over 20 years of experience in physical security, cyber security, Risk Management and Strategy Development.
Knut started his career as a Navy Officer where he planned and executed Military Operations and graduated from the Admiral's Staff Officers Course.
After leaving the armed forces, he led numerous customer engagements for the Risk Advisory Team of a Big 4 Consultancy.
Before founding Tenacities, Knut established the initial Security policy framework and initiated the development of the Public Safety Strategy for NEOM.
